Density monitoring on the SF₆ fleet that stays in service
New SF₆ switchgear is phased out 2026–2032 by voltage class, but the installed GIS and MV fleet runs for decades. It is exempt from periodic leak checks only with a tested leakage rate below 0.1 %/yr — or a pressure/density monitor with automatic alert. Retrofit the monitor, wire the alert to SCADA, keep the exemption.

Find, quantify and repair leaks on a legal deadline
Operators must survey equipment, quantify methane at source and repair leaks — mostly within 5 or 15 working days — with independent verification. Importers inherit the obligation from 2027. The instrument is the evidence that the survey happened and the repair worked.

[03] Biogas / biomethane
Digester stability and grid-injection quality you can prove
35 bcm of biomethane per year by 2030 means thousands of new digesters and injection points. Each needs continuous CH₄ (energy content) and CO₂ — the two channels NDIR does best, in a wet, H₂S-laden stream that poisons catalytic cells and does not touch a heated IR cell.

Continuous emission monitoring written into the permit
The revised Industrial Emissions Directive covers around 75 000 installations and binds limits and monitoring to best available techniques; data flows to the Industrial Emissions Portal from 2028. Multi-gas NDIR with EN 14181 quality assurance (QAL1/2/3) is the standard answer for large sources.

Declare a verified number instead of a default value
Since 1 Jan 2026 CBAM importers declare embedded emissions on verified actual data or default values. A measured, traceable CO₂ figure is what lets a producer claim its real, lower number — the calibration certificate travels with the declaration.

CO₂ measuring and control devices in zero-emission buildings
EPBD transposition by 29 May 2026; zero-emission standard for new public buildings from 2028 and all new buildings from 2030. Non-residential zero-emission buildings must carry measuring and control devices for IAQ — a volume market for a compact, stable CO₂ OEM channel.

ATEX/IECEx and occupational-exposure rules apply in every industrial jurisdiction. NDIR carries CH₄/CO₂/hydrocarbons; the electrochemical, thermocatalytic and semiconductor channels carry the rest — one certified analyser, honest about which channel measures what.

CH₄ analysis on LNG-fuelled ships under FuelEU / EU ETS
FuelEU Maritime caps the GHG intensity of energy used on board and EU ETS prices shipping emissions; methane slip on LNG engines is the number to measure. Watch-list application: the IMO net-zero framework is delayed, the EU port-side rules are live.
